who?
One might say Sebastián Cudicio is a rather versatile sort of artist, someone who seems quite good at bringing ideas to life across a rather broad range of creative fields. My particular favourite, you see, lies in mixed media illustration and design. It's where I get to mix old-school techniques with a bit of digital sorcery to create visuals that are, hopefully, rather unique.
Now, it might raise an eyebrow or two, but my career as an artist didn't actually start with pencils and paint. No, my first job involved an airplane cockpit.
Indeed. Grew up in a family of pilots, so I dutifully went to the air force academy, thinking I'd become a fighter pilot. Turns out, I much preferred creating things rather than, well, blowing them up.
My father, bless his heart, wasn't exactly thrilled when I swapped the air force for fine arts, but that odd period taught me some truly important lessons. The main one? Once you're in the air, you can't just change your mind and hop off the plane. You've got to finish what you started properly if you want to land in one piece. That's precisely how I approach all my work, and it's why I choose projects rather carefully.
I hit the ground running (no pun intended) as an illustrator, designer and art director, way back in 1993, after studying Industrial Design and Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've worked on everything from simple packaging to the big international ad agencies (Y&R, Wunderman, JWT, Burnett, BBDO, and so on), plus various design studios and web agencies—a truly mixed bag, you understand.
Since 2005, I've also been running STUDIOCUDICIO here in Vicenza, Italy, my luxury design consultancy. It's where I get to guide high-end design and art projects with a careful eye and, dare I say, a touch of artistic flair.
For a dozen years, I enjoyed teaching at the Scuola Internazionale di Comics di Padova, passing on what little I knew about illustration, design and sequential art to the next generation of visual storytellers. One hopes it was somewhat useful.
I'm terribly curious, and I truly believe that art, beauty and good design can actually make the world a better place. On that note, I must admit I'm quite picky about who I work with. I simply don't engage with racists, warmongers, or indeed, sexists. You probably get the picture.
For the record, I've picked up a few rather distinguished awards:
Best Dad of the World – The Daughter
Worst Husband of the World – The Wife
Meh – The Cat (R.I.P. 😢)
